Thalassemia is a blood disorder passed down through families (inherited) in which the makes abnormal form of hemoglobin, the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen. The disorder results in excessive destruction of red blood cells, which leads to anemia. There are more then 1000 patients in Haripur (Pakistan) & it surrounding areas, who are suffering from Thalassemia . A debilitating health condition with patients having an average life expectancy of less than 20 years, & many others dying without diagnosis, Thalassemic patients need URGENT CARE!!
In this contention Save The Mothers Trust Opened a Thalassemia centre in March 2010, & since its establishment is providing regular free blood transfusions & medical services to more than 150 registered patients, with an average of 300 patients being treated each month.
SMT aims to achieve quality-assured blood transfusions & provide a good standard of medical care. SMT has commenced this journey with very few assets but many hopes. Now in practical circumstances SMT is not only a ray of life for these poor sufferers but also a vehicle for education the effected families about this deadly dease through printed material & individual counseling, hence allowing parents to provide better care regularly children. With limited resources & a constantly increase number of patients, Save The Mothers Trust is experiencing some very critical problems in the continuation of provision of services.
